Until 2003 Martin was following an academic career, working on a PhD at the London School of Economics. In between his university work he completed a City and Guilds in Photography. This proved so successful and compelling, that he gave up his PhD to attend a two year Photography Course at the City of Westminster College, from which he graduated in 2005.
During 2004 he also completed a Foundation Course in Architectural photography run by the British Institute of Professional Photography and in 2005 the BIPP awarded him the student prize in their annual Fine Art Competition. Throughout his studies he worked as a freelance press photographer and also assisted a number of professional photographers on their varied projects. He continues to work with these photographers while pursuing his own work and exhibiting in a number of group shows in London.
